The Metal Monster - Preilimary
- THE METAL MONSTER - An acrylic painting on a 9 x 12 poster board. It was sent to Avon as a preliminary color sketch for approval.
For the finished painting, the editor asked me change the entire composition, he wanted a horizontal layout so he could use it as a wraparound cover. He also asked me to reduce the guy and gal and put them closer to the monster, and to place this scene on the right side of the painting. On the left side he suggested I paint an extension of the landscape. And finally, he wanted the entire scene to occupy the lower third of the painting, leaving the top 2/3 of the artwork as a blank sky where the title design will appear on the right side (front cover), and a descriptive blurb at the top-left side (back cover).
So that's what I did. See picture 297 for how it came out. Though the composition is suitable for the way Avon designed the wraparound cover with most of it filled with lettering. But without the lettering it becomes a terrible composition because the scene is stretched out along the bottom third of the canvas with nothing in the top two-thirds.
